Has anyone else had a problem such as the following in Jesus and the Victory of God?
Today I was reading along and told that I could find more of what I was interested in should I be so kind to turn to ch. 13. Chapter 13 was not so helpful, and I began to wonder whether the chapter number had been misassigned.
Later, I was reading along and he said that the notion of Jesus as Coming King would be addressed in ch. 12. But then I noticed that ch. 13 is entitled, “The Return of the King.”
It got me to thinking that maybe somewhere along the line there were a couple chapters flip-flopped or else perhaps an extra chapter was added that messed up the enumeration. Then it got me to thinking that if anyone else had experienced similar difficulties then we probably both have spent way too much time with this particular book. Anybody want to own up to it?
I’m sure that many of my scholar friends have had their own problems with JVG: exegetical, theological, editorial, and otherwise. Feel free to talk about that here as well. Whatever. It’s your blog.

I wonder if there’s a reason why Mr. Wright titled his book as if it were part of the Harry Potter series…
John: *Like* (NTW thinks that we should retain the secular, Roman meaning for “gospel” at the beginning of Mark, which basically means “victory”; FWIW)
You know that if you propose a similar explanation for the organization of the Gospel of John in certain circles, you’ll get a heap of criticism – right?
Daniel
The book was produced by Tom making a camera ready copy for SCK using Nota Bene. It is no surprise given the lack of the usual editorial checks and balances (returning proofs to the author for checking etc) that these kinds of slips occured. The book’s structure was for a long time scribbled up on a whiteboard in Tom’s rooms in Oxford, with lots of rubbings out, reorderings etc etc.
Oh, and NTW came up with the ABC and the XYZ format before JKR – she owes him money.
“Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” FTW.
that should read SPCK
I’ve heard Dr. Wright say that he had planned to have an additional chapter at the end of JVG on the resurrection. This turned into The Resurrection of the Son of God. So there were clearly a lot of last minute changes. Aside from these editorial blunders, I’ve found a wealth of goodness in Wright’s material.
Yes, Mike. I appreciate much in his books as well, and assign it for a class or two. This was just the voicing of one particular experience.
