Upcoming Speaking Gigs: NC & U.K.

Over the next month or so I’m going to be putting in a few miles in the air and on land. In case you’re interested, here are some places I’ll be–I hope to catch up with some of you there:

**UPDATE**

This Sunday, June 3, I will be leading the conversation at Emmaus Way in Durham. The service runs from 5:00-6:30 p.m. Hope to see some of you there.

This weekend we’re heading to NC for a family wedding, which is opening up an opportunity for me to preach in the church my mom grew up in and which she now serves as music minister:

Sunday, May 27, Oakhurst Baptist Church, in Charlotte (5037 Monroe Road – Charlotte, NC).

Then…

Tuesday, May 29, Emerging Church Discussion Group, meeting at the Inclusion Community House in Cornelius, NC. This will be less of a talk, more of a discussion.

I’m hoping to put something on the calendar for when I’m in Durham the following week. Stay tuned for that.

For those of you across the pond, I’ll be in London the first Sunday of July after a week of hard work, study, and pints in Cambridge:

Sunday July 1, Beechen Grove Baptist Church, Clarendon Road, Watford, Herts, U.K. (Confession, I actually have no idea what the various parts of that address mean. All I know is that my uncle is a pastor here and he’s invited me to preach while I’m in town!)

Watford is a large town in England, more or less a northern suburb of London now, in the county of Herts = Hertfordshire. It’s about an hour from my home, but I won’t be able to join you as I expect to be in the USA then. Have a good trip, and enjoy your Cambridge beer!

Finally – a US blogger coming to the UK!

Is Watford the only place you are planning to visit? I shall be at the opposite end of the country on that date — otherwise I would grit my teeth and go into a chapel for their (ugh!) worship service.

Wish I could head to Cambridge with you! My first pint in the UK was an Old Speckled Hen at The Eagle (across from King’s College and extremely famous). My favorite was the Old Peculiar on tap at the Pickerel Inn (Magdalene St.).

Raise the wrist for all of us in the New World, eh?

What are you up to while you’re in Cambridge? I’d be interested to come to a seminar if you’re doing one, or we could meet for a pint somewhere further off the tourist trail than the Eagle! I work for one of the churches in town and have been reading your blog for years.

Is that Durham, NC? If so, please let me know when/where you’ll be. That’s close enough for me to drive down for the day.

Will, I just confirmed with Emmaus Way in Durham. They have a 5:00 p.m. service where I’ll be leading the conversation.

Just a bit of history on the piling up of locations in U.K. addresses, Daniel.

I believe they were assigned during the period when British imperial ambitions were out of all proportion, extending to various galaxies. The “Hert” in the address originally referred to a cluster of planets near the Dagobah System.

Interesting anecdote: The release of J. B. Lightfoot’s volumes on the Apostolic Fathers was delayed a year as he had originally used a Star Date calendar rather than the Gregorian calendar.

Hope it goes well tonight, Daniel. I’m passing through Durham right now on the way home from our family vacation. Wish I could stop and see you. If you’re going to be in town at all after Sunday let me know.
